Experience the cosmos: Keck Observatory invites community to open house

W.M. Keck Observatory is hosting an open house from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters in Waimea.

The public is invited to this free special educational event featuring more than two dozen astronomy exhibits for all ages to enjoy.

The facility is located at 65-1120 Mamalahoa Highway across from North Hawaii Community Hospital. Parking is free.

Keck Observatory employees, from astronomers and engineers, to technicians, administrators and others will showcase science-rich, interactive activities throughout Keck Observatory’s campus.

Some of the many interactive activities include:

• Taking infrared selfies.

• Tasting sub-zero nitrogen ice cream.

• Watching a 3-D astronomy movie.

• Using a hydraulic press to make a brass hexagon souvenir key ring embossed with 36 segments — a replica of the primary mirror on the Keck I and Keck II telescopes.

• Building robots using a toothbrush.

• Visiting the “Keck Theater” to hear presentations about the latest happenings at the observatory.

• Keiki cosmic face painting.
