Film series set to begin

The winter Friday Film Series in Hilo will start Jan. 10, this time focusing on the topic of aging.

Each film will start 1 p.m. at the Institute for Astronomy at 640 N. Aohuku Place in Hilo. This facility is at the end of the street mauka of ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center on which several observatory headquarters are situated. Moviegoers are asked to park on the street.

Here’s the schedule:

l Jan. 10: “On Golden Pond” (1981), starring Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn, Jane Fonda, Dabney Coleman. Drama. Synopsis: Clash between father and rebellious daughter.

l Jan. 17: “About Schmidt” (2002), starring Jack Nicholson. Comedy. Synopsis: Recently retired insurance man reviews his life.

l Jan. 24: “The Dresser” (1983, British), starring Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay. Drama. Synopsis: His dresser is the only one who can keep an aging actor together.

l Jan. 31: “Tokyo Story” (1953, Japanese), starring Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama, Setsuko Hara. Drama. Synopsis: Elderly couple visits their adult children, who are busy with their own lives.

l Feb. 7: “Cocoon” (1985), starring Steve Guttenberg, Don Ameche, Brian Dennehy, Hume Cronyn, Wilfred Brimley, Jessica Tandy, Maureen Stapleton. Sci-fi. Synopsis: Nursing home residents are offered eternal youth by aliens.

l Feb. 14: “The Straight Story” (1997), starring Richard Farnsworth, Harry Dean Stanton, Sissy Spacek. Drama. Synopsis: Elderly man goes 300 miles on a riding lawnmower to visit his ailing brother.

l Feb. 21: “Strangers in Good Company” (1990, Canadian), starring a cast of unknowns. Drama. Synopsis: Eight elderly women — all strangers — on a bus become acquainted when the bus strands them in the wilderness.

l Feb. 28: “Harry and Tonto” (1973), starring Art Carney, Ellen Burstyn. Comic drama. Synopsis: Old man takes a cross-country trip with his cat.

l March 7: “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012, British), starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Tom Wilkinson. Comedy. Synopsis: British seniors move to India to retire in luxury but find the place gone to seed.

l March 14: “Quartet” (2012, British), starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Michael Cambon. Comic drama. Synopsis: Famous string quartet might or might not reunite in a retirement home for elderly musicians.
