The Japanese Community Association of Hawaii is offering two $1,500 scholarship awards to local high school graduates from the Big Island and current college students pursuing a degree in Japanese studies at a college or university in the United States
The Japanese Community Association of Hawaii is offering two $1,500 scholarship awards to local high school graduates from the Big Island and current college students pursuing a degree in Japanese studies at a college or university in the United States or Japan as early as this fall.
The deadline for students to apply is March 31.
“We at JCAH are so pleased and excited to support this Japanese studies initiative,” said Janet Fujioka, the association’s scholarship award chairperson. “We want to make this an annual effort, so we can increase the number of local students whose intent is to major or minor in Japanese studies.”
Qualifications of applicants include:
• Must be a resident of the Hawaii Island. Preference will be given to graduating high school seniors whose intent is to major or minor in Japanese studies. Post-secondary students, formerly from the Big Island may also be considered.
• Enrolled or planning to enroll at a college or university.
• Preference will be given to an applicant whose parent or guardian is a member of good standing of the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii.
Criteria:
• Academic merit as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Some degree of financial need, not necessarily determined by federal guidelines.
• Two letters of reference.
All interested applicants are required to complete and submit all components of the application by the deadline and be willing to be honored at JCAH’s Nikkei Kigyo (enterprises of Japanese ancestry) reception May 15.
