The University of Hawaii at Hilo North Hawaii Education and Research Center (NHERC) is currently accepting registration for two noncredit summer courses that will be offered at the center beginning this month.
“Intro to Hawaiian Language,” by Jill Krael, is scheduled from 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 23-July 23. Tuition is $50. “Intermediate Lightroom Techniques,” by Alea Schechter, is the follow-up to “Intro to Digital Photography and Editing.” Classes are slated from 5-7:30 p.m. June 24-July 17. Tuition is $75, and basic computer knowledge is required.

Officials also announce a schedule of three-credit classes that will be offered in Fall 2014 at the NHERC campus at 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa. The classified student application deadline is July 1.
These are the classes:
• Agriculture 230 CRN 14338: “Sustainable Agriculture” is an evaluation of conventional and alternative farming methods in the United States, Polynesia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America from a long-term perspective. Classes are set for 4-5:50 p.m. Mondays and 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
• Anthropology 320 CRN 14337: “Cross Cultural Study of Women,” an upper-division, writing intensive course, comparatively analyzes the role of women and women’s lives in different societies through topics such as women’s status, life stages, gender roles, images and power. The class meets from 2:30-5:15 p.m. Tuesdays.
• Geology 170 CRN 14339: “Volcanoes and Earthquakes” is a systematic study of volcanic eruptions and damaging earthquakes using scientific applications to understand their underlying causes. Classes are scheduled from 6-8:30 p.m. Mondays.
• Political Science 101 CRN 14357: “American Politics” examines the organization and functioning of the American political system. Classes are slated for 2:30-5 p.m. Thursdays.
• Psychology 100 CRN 14340: “Survey of Psychology” is an introductory course providing a general survey of the entire field of psychology, and serves as the prerequisite for all upper-division psychology courses. Classes meet from 6-7:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• University 101: “Paths to Academic and Lifelong Success” is designed for the first-time college student and promotes the attitudes, competencies and skills to enhance academic success and foster social integration into the college environment. Classes are set for 2:30-3:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
