A 16-hour training session will be offered in Waimea on four evenings beginning Monday, March 3, for volunteers willing to commit four to five hours a week to North Hawaii Hospice doing respite care, family and patient support, office or other administrative tasks.
Course content covers roles and responsibilities of hospice staff and volunteers, policies and procedures, patient confidentiality, boundary issues, communication skills, information about death and dying, exploring personal responses to end-of-life issues, grief work and spirituality.
Attendance at all four sessions is mandatory to become a certified hospice volunteer. Dinners will be provided most evenings, with a potluck on the last night. The training will be 5-7 p.m. the first day; 4-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5; 4-9 p.m. Monday, March 10; and 4-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12.
“We especially need respite care volunteers in Waikoloa and along the Hamakua Coast,” said Catrinka Holland, volunteer services coordinator.
