The Orchid Isle Orchestra will perform classical and holiday favorites 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo. String students start the concert with ensemble music featuring violin, cello, viola and piano.
Concertmaster Alden Young, a junior at Hilo High School, will perform the third movement of the Bruch Violin Concerto with piano accompaniment. The program continues with music played by the Orchid Isle Orchestra, which combines talent from four Hawaii Island teaching studios with players from the general community.
Guest conductor Armando Mendoza will direct the orchestra in performing “St. Paul’s Suite” by Gustav Holst. OIO Music Director Cathy Young will lead the orchestra in “Arabian Dance” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” music from “Brandenburg Concerto #3” by Bach, Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Greensleeves” and some favorite Christmas carols. Rick Mazurowski’s keyboard is a harp and a harpsichord for the V. Williams and Bach music.
The public is invited to this free concert.
