Hilo ‘Maniacs’ complete Disney runs
Drawing inspiration from the late Wayne Joseph, two of Hilo’s “Marathon Maniac” members, Aaron Morita, 59, and Anthony Nolta, 61, completed the Inaugural Dopey Challenge during Walt Disney World’s Marathon Weekend, Jan. 9-12 in Florida.
Moirita and Nolta each finished the half-marathon in 3 hour, 6 minutes. Nolta completed the marathon in 5:18 minutes, while Morita took time to stop for photographs and finished in 5:27.
The total distance of the four events were 48.6 miles.
Joseph, who passed away in 2013, was a Big Island running enthusiast and a former Waiakea High coach and teacher who was a correspondent for the Tribune-Herald.
“One of the last things Big Dog told me was, “I really would like to write about that story. … if I’m still alive then,” Morita said. “We miss you a lot Big Dog. You will forever remain in our hearts.”
