This webcam photo shows an explosion that occurred Sunday afternoon at the lava lake atop Kilauea volcano. At approximately 1:20 p.m., a portion of the Halema‘uma‘u Crater wall collapsed, triggering an explosion of spatter and a robust particle-lade plume. Fist-sized clasts were deposited around the closed Halema‘uma‘u visitor overlook. Earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 and 3.6 also hit the summit area at 4:42 a.m. Monday.
