Jeep burns in Hilo garage
Quick action by firefighters Saturday night kept a sport-utility vehicle fire from destroying a Hilo home and a garage.
According to a written Fire Department statement, five units responded to the 9:28 p.m. alarm to find a 2010 Jeep on fire in a garage on Kaiulani Street with the fire from the engine compartment spreading to the walls and ceiling of the garage.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and used ventilators to remove smoke from the house.
The fire was reported under control at 9:44 p.m. and extinguished at 9:50 p.m.
Fire officials estimated damages at $24,500 and said that about $394,500 in property value was saved.
No injuries were reported.
The scene was turned over to police and fire inspectors for investigation into the cause of the fire.
