Police arrest 30 for DUI

During the week of May 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 10; Puna, six; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 448 DUI arrests compared with 420 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.25 percent.

There have been 526 major accidents so far this year compared with 553 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.88 percent.

To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared with 10 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 20 percent in official fatalities. There also have been three vehicular deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the third in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
