Police arrest 36 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and four were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona and Puna, 11 each; and North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 800 DUI arrests compared to 741 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 909 major accidents so far this year compared to 977 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

To date, there have been 26 official traffic fatalities, compared to 20 official fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase 30 percent for official fatalities. There have also been four vehicle related deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and two within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
