Health officials warn about spill

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii state health officials are warning the public about a wastewater spill at Pukele Stream on Oahu.

Officials said late Tuesday that a private contractor working on La’i Road discovered a cracked pipe that was discharging the wastewater into the stream.

According to officials, the contractor cleared the 10-inch line and maintained most of the flow through the pipe.

An estimated 860 gallons of wastewater was discharged.

Honolulu officials were notified about the incident and a city crew was working on repairs Tuesday night.

Officials advise the public to stay out of Pukele and Palolo streams to Date Street Bridge.

Warning signs are being posted and sampling is planned for Wednesday.
