HONOLULU (AP) — A mortuary owner who withheld 129 funeral reimbursements for people in Medicaid-funded state assistance programs will likely spend up to 30 days in jail and pay $50,000 to Hawaii’s crime victim fund.
Claus Z. Hansen, 51, has repaid most of the nearly $92,000 in reimbursements he withheld between April 2009 and May 2013.
Hansen pleaded guilty Friday to seven counts of theft. He had originally been charged with 20 counts of theft, three counts of money laundering and six counts of racketeering.
Since Hansen’s case, the Department of Human Services Med-Quest Division has amended its Funeral Payments Program to no longer filter reimbursements through service providers.
Hansen is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 22.
