HONOLULU (AP) — The Pentagon is requesting $50 million to address “inadequate” fire protection infrastructure at the Navy’s Red Hill fuel storage farm at Pearl Harbor.
The Defense Department’s logistics agency notes the difficulty of extinguishing fuel fires and the added problem of the farm’s underground operations and confined spaces.
The agency is requesting a sprinkler system for the upper access tunnel and a foaming fire suppression system for the lower tunnel.
Also part of the request is a 350,000-gallon firefighting water storage tank, two pumps, hydrants, oil-tight doors in tunnels and a new alarm system.
The underground fuel farm was completed in 1943.
The Navy in January said that up to 27,000 gallons of jet fuel had apparently leaked from a tank that had undergone extensive repairs.
