HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii health department officials are investigating possible illegal dumping of toxins at an Oahu site.
Investigators are testing the corrosiveness of a white powdery substance stored on land leased by a trucking company from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. The property is near the Kalaeloa Airport.
The calcium hydroxide — or lime — is used in construction. When left exposed to the elements and mixed with water, it becomes corrosive and can burn eyes and skin.
The substance is among tons of used building materials dumped on the property leased by FCS Inc., a trucking company owned by Floyd Carns.
Carns is referring questions to the DHHL, which has declined to comment because of the investigation.
