WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — The Westin Maui Resort &Spa plans to triple the size of its ballroom, enlarge its spa and build a three- to four-story parking garage.
The Kaanapali resort is seeking permits for the $55 million project.
General Manager Gregg Lundberg said he expects it will take a year for the hotel to get a special management area permit and between six months and a year to get a building permit.
Expanding the ballroom to 12,000 square feet from 4,000 square feet will help the hotel attract large groups and businesses looking for event space, Lundberg said.
“It makes us a little more competitive in the market when you have facilities” that attract bigger clients, he said.
Adding 400 new parking spaces by building the garage will create parking for employees closer to the hotel, and provide more parking for visitors, guests and people attending events at the resort.
The changes expand on $70 million in renovations completed at the resort’s Ocean Tower in March. The 553-room tower features new furnishings, glass-enclosed showers and redesigned balconies.
The hotel initially opened as the Maui Surf Hotel in 1971. It’s now managed by Starwood Hotels &Resorts Worldwide Inc.
