5 dead as 8.2 quake hits Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile — Chile’s interior minister said the death toll had risen to five by press time Tuesday as the result of a powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake that struck off northern Chile.

The quake forced evacuations along the country’s entire Pacific coast for fear of tsunamis.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo attributed the five deaths to heart attacks or being crushed.

Thousands lost power, and hundreds of thousands of Chileans spent the night away from their beds because of the evacuation order, which remained in effect for northern Chile.
