Helen Gillette Thompson, 93, of Hilo died Friday at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Wakeeney, Kan., she was a journalist and writer. Private services. Survived by companion, Dan Wahl of Hilo; sons, Brian Gillette of Anchorage, Alaska, and Lance (Leola) Gillette of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Maia Cummings of Anchorage; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jessica Keiko Kawasuna Saiki, 85, died Feb. 21 in Los Angeles. Born in Hilo, she was an author, poet, painter, artist, soprano soloist who played harp, pianist, and a composer of choral music for church. Private services. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). David James VanderHoek, 82, of Kailua-Kona died Monday at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Spokane, Wash., he was a retired carpenter, groundskeeper and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Private services. Survived by sons, Gene VanderHoek of Kalaoa, James VanderHoek and Joel VanderHoek of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Dena Rabara of Kalaoa; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Cremation Services of West Hawaii.
