Details: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers full-day course, with a certificate of completion at the end of the day. Preregistration required. Cost is $40, which covers materials and lunch.

5TH ANNUAL HAKALAU BAY PAKA ALOHA HONUA FESTIVAL 

Where: Hakalau Bay 

When: 10 a.m. July 21 

Details: Basic Image, Inc and the Pakalove Crew invite public to help celebrate the fifth anniversary of the restoration project of Hakalau Bay Paka. This year’s theme is Sustain Our Surf which focuses on watershed and ocean stewardship. Activities include the Hakalau Hang-10 and the Paka Pull, a garden walk/ tour and fun for the entire ohana. Music, art, entertainment, ono food and local culture. Collaborators include Big Island Invasive Species Committee, People Attentive to Children, Yoga Centered, USDA-PSW-IPIF, Mokupapapa: Discovery Center for Hawaii’s Remote Coral Reefs, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, Starbucks.

26TH ANNUAL RICHARDSON ROUGHWATER SWIM 

Where: Richardson Ocean Park 

When: 8 a.m. July 29 

Details: Entry forms for this open-ocean swim are available at all county pools, the P&R office and at Richardson Ocean Park. Entry fee is $15 postmarked by July 20. Late entry is $25. For those with strong swimming skills. Call Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
