WALKING IN THE WILD MEDITATION 

Where: ‘Iole, the Historic Bond Homestead, Kapaau 

When: 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 4 

Details: First Saturday of each month. A few minutes of silent meditation, followed by brief intro to mindfulness and silent walking meditation. Different easy route each month. Concludes with a few minutes of silence, refreshments. Bring hat, hiking shoes, sunscreen, water, a towel or cushion, raingear, mosquito repellent. Suggested donation: $10-$15.

BEACH WHEELCHAIR ACCESS 

Where: Richardson Ocean Park, Hilo 

When: 10 a.m. Aug. 9 

Details: Thursdays 10 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. through Sept. 27. Mobi mats provide wheelchair access along the sand. Beach wheelchair, handheld shower and flotation equipment is available. Participants must bring their own support; access is a rugged route around the left side of the building. Free.

GARDEN AS TEACHER 

Where: Lyman Museum, Hilo 

When: 8:30 a.m. Aug. 11 

Details: Get results of Hawaii County food self-sufficiency study, hear from Liliuokalani Gardens landscape architect, participate in a tea ceremony in the garden’s Urasenke Tea House and more. $75/$65. Call for reservations.

RAIN FOREST RUNS 

Where: Cooper Center 

When: 6:30 a.m. Aug. 18 

Details: Volcano Art Center Rain Forest Runs. This family event presents a half marathon, 10K run and 5k walk in Volcano Village; open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. $35-75 registration; sponsored in part by Hawaii Tourism Authority and county Department of Research and Development.
