Details: Bring a bag lunch and join Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers in an open discussion on topics ranging from land management and conservation issues to environmental and cultural history. PEOPLE AND LAND OF KAHUKU
Where: HVNP Kahuku Unit
When: 9:30 a.m. Jan. 13
Details: Two-mile, three-hour moderate hike explores pastures, quarry, airstrip and 1868 lava fields. Rangers explain how people lived here, from earliest Hawaiians to today. Walk in emerging native forest, hear history of violent earthquakes and eruptions and the residents who survived them. Learn how National Park Service plans to restore and protect native ecosystems and cultural sites. Also on Jan. 20, Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 10, March 24.
