Details: Ranger-led two-mile, three-hour moderate hike; see pastures, quarry, airstrip, 1868 lava fields. Learn about earliest Hawaiians to today. Walk in native forest, hear about earthquakes, eruptions, park plans to restore native ecosystems, cultural sites. Also Jan. 20, Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 10, March 24.

PALM TRAIL HIKE
Where: HVNP Kahuku Unit
When: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 19
Details: Relatively easy guided 2.6-mile loop over scenic pasture along ancient cinder cone with panoramic views. See relics of ranching era, sections of remnant native forest, 1868 volcanic features. Also Feb. 10, March 16. Drive through gate, meet at visitor contact tent. Bring water. No advance registration.
