Details: Help us keep Kaiwiki Road rubbish-free and beautiful. If you want to work in teams, meet at Kaiwiki Park (four miles up) to carpool down the hill. Soft drinks, plastic gloves and trash bags provided. If raining, or the ground is really wet, we’ll postpone the event to the following Saturday.

LUNCH WITH A RANGER AT KAHUKU
Where: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kahuku Unit, Kahuku gate, mauka of Highway 11 at 70.5 mile marker
When: 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17, March 17, March 30
Details: Bring a bag lunch and join park rangers in an open discussion on topics ranging from land management and conservation issues to environmental and cultural history. Drive through the Kahuku gate; park and go to the visitor contact tent near the ranch buildings. Meet at the activities board for the location and topic of the day. No advance registration required.

NIAULANI NATURE WALK IN VOLCANO VILLAGE
Where: VAC Niaulani Campus
When: Twice a week
Details: Niaulani Nature Walk — Free Guided Rain Forest Tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, short loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. Free; donations welcome.

HIKING IN KALAPANA WITH THE SIERRA CLUB
Where: Kalapana, corner of sand and lava, Kalapana
When: 9 a.m. Feb. 23
Details: A morning hike going toward the lava entry but not to it. We plan to go to the old canoe landing area and over last year’s lava flow and return. It will be about 5 or 6 miles of hiking on uneven lava rock. Call for more information and to sign up. Pre-registration required.
