Author presents book on POWs
John Powers will discuss his book “Bean Camp to Briar Patch-Life in the POW Camps of Korea and Vietnam” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Basically Books in downtown Hilo.
Powers is a Vietnam veteran, holds a master’s degree in education, and spent 31 years in the classroom. As the historian for a group of POWs from World War II, he aims to spread awareness on the part of the American public about the sacrifices of those who have been held captive.
“On this 40th anniversary of the return of our POWs from Vietnam, it is time for Americans to take a good look at what others have done for all of us at great expense to themselves. By trying to understand what they endured we honor those who sacrificed so much,” Powers said.
