Beginning American Sign Language workshop offered

The University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service presents a six-week workshop in Beginning American Sign Language and Deaf Culture starting Fe. 13. Classes are heldfrom 5-6:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

Taught by Ku Mei Kern, a nationally certified instructor through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, this course is for anyone interested in interacting with those who use sign language as their main form of communication.

Classes will focus on pre-sign language skills in order to establish the correct mindset and structuring for American Sign Language

grammar and spatial representation. Beginning sign vocabulary and Deaf Culture topics will also be covered. No prior experience is necessary.

The cost of the workshop is $100 with a $15 materials fee payable to the instructor at the first class.
