Far exceeding its goal of 85 pints, the Blood Bank of Hawaii collected a total of 107 pints of blood Sept. 19 at a Hilo blood drive hosted by the Akaka Falls Lions Club at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale.
“The real heroes of any blood drive are those who make the effort to stop by for screening and to donate blood,” said event Chair Patrick Pajo.
Afterward, he and co-chair Lynnette Kaneshiro and club president Blayne Hanagami presented a $500 check to Lori Kaneshige, the blood bank’s director of collections, and Michelle Tandara, its director of recruitment.
The Honolulu-based bank has acquired a new blood mobile for the state that is expected to arrive on Oahu by the end of the year. The Akaka Falls Lions donation is in support of the new mobile unit, which will be shipped throughout the state for blood drives on the various islands.
