Consul general to attend armistice anniversary event
The Korean War Veterans Association of Hawaii, Big Island Chapter No. 231, invites the community to join the veterans and their families in observing the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice at a 10 a.m. ceremony on Sunday, July 21, at the Hilo Veterans Cemetery No. 1 pavilion.
The armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. Republic of Korea Honolulu Consul General Young Kil Suh will be the keynote speaker. Hisashi Morita, a prisoner of war for 27 months, will discuss how he survived in captivity. The program will include the posting of the colors, an invocation, a solemn service and floral presentations by veterans groups.
Coordinators invite the public, families of servicemen killed in action and missing in action in the Korean War, veterans organizations and the Big Isle Korean community to attend. Relatives of servicemen KIA or MIA will be able to offer floral bouquets at the ceremony. For more information, please contact Emile Wery at 965-1873, or email WERYE001@hawaii.rr.com.
