Hawaiʻi Nei Art Exhibition celebrated native species

This year’s Hawaii Nei Art Exhibition celebrated the native species of Hawaii Island through the artwork of more than 100 artists. Hawaii Nei 2012 ran from Nov. 2-29 at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center, and all entries depicted plants and animals that arrived to our islands without the help of humans.

“The show, which featured works in a variety of media from wood sculpture to watercolors, promoted awareness of native Hawaiian ecosystems,” said Wailoa administrator Codie King. “These endangered ecosystems provide fresh water and other natural resources vital to our culture and overall well-being. Native species and ecosystems support the unique way of life here in Hawaii nei, our beloved home.”

A variety of events were held in conjunction with the exhibition to inspire community members’ creativity while encouraging their investigation of species native to Hawaii Island. Art hikes prior to the show helped community members access rare native species and ecosystems.

The opening night reception welcomed 300 guests with music, award ceremonies and raffle prizes. Saturday talk-story sessions gave the public a closer look at some of the species featured by artists.

The people’s choice award went to “Eyes on You,” a photograph by Lanaya Deily featuring the native pueo, or Hawaiian short-eared owl. In the children’s category, Dakota Hill won the people’s choice award for the drawing titled “He‘e Hiding from the Rain.”

“The Hawaii Nei planning committee would like to extend a mahalo nui loa to all participants and community members for supporting Hawaii Nei 2012. The enthusiasm of artists and the community keeps Hawaii Nei fresh and growing every year,” King said.
