Long-time arts advocate and founder of the Kalani Retreat Center Richart Koob is showing 15 recent paintings this week, through Saturday, at Hilo’s East Hawaii Cultural Center.
Koob has a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and served as Hawaii Island arts coordinator for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. He has been painting since childhood, influenced by visiting artists-in-residence at Kalani, mentors such as Arthur Johnsen and his careers in dance and arts administration.
The East Hawaii Cultural Center galleries are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. In celebration of the arts of Hawaii and to usher in a new era of cultural diversity, EHCC is reincorporating under the name “Hawaii Museum of Modern Art.” The public is invited to a special one-night art show from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on First Friday.
In addition to Koob’s art, three other local artists will be honored: Bea Israel, Rose Adare and Rod Cameron. For additional information, call 935-9085 or 961-5711.
