Last Saturday’s Chess Fun Day in the Keaau Village Market featured the group’s first simultaneous chess game, pitting a West Coast star against a field of isle chess buffs.
Some of the area’s best players went up against Burt Izumikawa, a California chess master and two-time winner of the Northern California Chess Tournament.
“Burt would make one move, then on to the next player for the second move, and so on,” said event coordinator Jim Lee. “The game was tense and the outcome was exciting.”
When the dust settled, the score was Izumikawa eight wins, one loss and one draw.
“It was an outstanding game, and everybody had fun,” said Lee, who invites everyone to stop by and join in the fun every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call him at 640-5845, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
