Ka‘u alumni prepare for 12th reunion

The Ka‘u High School Alumni & Friends will host its 12th annual potluck reunion from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday at the Pahala Community Center. All alumni and friends are invited.

“Enjoy a day of fun, good food and live music,” said publicity Chair James Yamaki. “Please bring your favorite dish to share. More than 300 attended last year’s reunion.”

Yamaki said this year’s event will feature Back to the Fifties, a band led by lead singer Ernest Kalani of the KHS class of 1966, backed up by guitarist Peter Anderson and keyboardist Johnny Waller.

Other local entertainers attending the reunion also will display their singing and musical talents. Mahealani Hula Halau, a senior women’s group formerly led by the late Edna Aguil, is also on the program, as it has been for almost every one of the previous reunions.

Members of the class of 1963, who will celebrate their 50th reunion that Saturday evening at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, will attend the next day’s potluck in Ka‘u to cap their own weekend reunion.

There are several other special class get-togethers planned over the weekend. The class of 1960 meets at New China Restaurant in Hilo at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The class of 1959, sponsor of the popular annual Las Vegas reunions in June, will meet Saturday at Julia Neal’s vacation rental in the former Ka‘u Meat Market, and again after the potluck on Sunday.

The class of 1961 will celebrate classmates’ 70th-birthday year at the Sunday potluck, followed by a get-together at a Pahala vacation rental. Also scheduled to attend the Sunday festivities are members of the class of 1958, originators of the annual Ka‘u potluck reunion, who celebrated their 55th reunion on Oahu in June at Tsukiji Fish Market & Restaurant at Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Other classes celebrating various anniversaries also are expected to attend the potluck and meet at classmates’ homes before and after the potluck.

The alumni potluck reunion is held annually on the Sunday of the Statehood Day holiday weekend in August. The class of 1965 is hosting this year’s event.
