Local independent pharmacy honored for service
Pharmacist Kerri Okamura, BSPharm, the pharmacy director for KTA
Superstores, a Good Neighbor Pharmacy in Hilo, was recently named a
2013 Immunization Champion by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) for
her efforts in providing immunizations to her community.
Nominees were evaluated based on the areas of impact, collaboration, originality,
overcoming challenges and opportunities created for pharmacists.
Okamura has been a pharmacist for nearly 20 years and she has delivered
thousands of individual vaccines. She has taken her role as an immunizer far
outside the confines of the pharmacy walls, and each year she coordinates
many on-site flu clinics for local employers.
Practicing in a small island community often presents a challenge in terms of staying competitive with other, large chain pharmacies, but she has stayed ahead of the curve by personalizing service, intimately connecting with patients and becoming deeply involved in community affairs that truly make a difference.
