Mother’s Gift Fair canceled
Nelson and Kainoa Makua of Na Makua have cancelled their May 5 Na Makua Invitational Mother’s Gift Fair.
Nelson, who is also the director for the Merrie Monarch Invitational Hawaiian Arts Fair, said, “This year’s Merrie Monarch Fair was so successful for so many vendors, that many of them sold out of their product and weren’t going to be able to participate in our Mother’s Gift Fair.” This was a major factor in their decision to cancel their event.
“Putting together an event like this involves a lot of people so deciding to cancel was not an easy decision.”
“The 50th anniversary of the Merrie Monarch brought many people to Hilo, which was good for local businesses as well as the vendors, but it didn’t leave much left for us,” said Nelson, who called every vendor personally to tell them about the cancellation and to thank them for their support.
“I told them that we felt it would not be fair or profitable for them for us to try and pull off an event that wasn’t successful for all and, knowing us, they were all very understanding.”
The Na Makua Invitational Christmas Gift Fair is still set for Dec. 6-7 at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo. Vendors who are interested are invited to contact Nelson or Kainoa Makua at 966-4647; or, download an application online at www.namakua.com.
