Paintball mega arena to debut
The Hawaiian Blend Paintball team will sponsor a special clinic stressing safety on the field next month at the Hilo Armory. Posters with details about the Sept. 22 event have been posted at Don’s Grill, Blane’s, Ken’s Pancake House, K’s Drive In, Hilo Surplus Store, Ocean Sushi, Hilo Ace Hardware and Gaspro.
The event, which also will include a media celebrity fun match, will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., with the celebs taking the floor early on.
The fee will be $38 per person, which includes use of all of the necessary equipment. Each team can play all day long, taking turns on the floor.
Sign up at least two weeks before the event with coordinator Charlie Kawamoto at 965-8172. The club will have food and beverages available for purchase.
The event will be the public debut of the state’s first Paintball Mega Arena, which is 70 feet by 40 feet in dimension, with protective netting all around.
It’s a huge blowup apparatus that weighs 1,000 pounds and takes four blowers to inflate. There will be 12 blowup bunkers inside, for strategic paintball attacks.
“It’s all soft, like a giant beach ball. The only thing hard is the basketball court,” said Kawamoto.
For safety reasons, no sliding, crawling or diving will be allowed. Participation is open to ages 10 and up.
