Scouts plant trees at park

Chase Tanaka — with help from a dedicated support crew — has just completed his Eagle Scout Community Service Project in Hilo.

On Saturday, Tanaka and Friends worked on the landscaping and beautification of Reed’s Bay Park.

This entailed planting close to 20 trees — loulu palms, milo and lauhala, all native Hawaiian plants.

In addition, he had assembled and set in place two picnic tables.

As part of Boy Scout Troop 78, Tanaka has successfully accomplished a monumental task, as achieving the Eagle ranking is the highest accomplishment in scouting.

Most young men achieve this goal near their senior year in high school, but Tanaka has accomplished it already, and he is only a sophomore at Kamehameha Hawaii.

He is the son of Suellen and Leonard Tanaka.
