St. Joe students join fight against leukemia
The kindergartners and fifth-graders of St. Joseph Elementary teamed up recently to raise money for a program called “Pennies for Patients” by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
All classes from preschool through sixth grade helped to fundraise, and individual students also bought “paper pennies” for $1 that was displayed around campus. The kindergartners and fifth-graders worked together to collect, sort, count, and graph their progress during this fundraiser. They also collaborated in creating posters to display around campus and made daily announcements at morning assembly.
The fifth-grade class collected the most donations totaling $360 and earned a pizza party.
The school goal was to collect $1,200. For every $150 that was collected, a letter from the word “leukemia.” The students raised more that $1,511, erasing the word.
