Siniva Pota and Madison Karr have received $1,000 scholarships from the Zonta Club of Hilo.
Pota, a junior at University of Hawaii at Hilo, received the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. Pota majors in accounting and business, where she belongs to the Accounting Club and the National Business Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi.
Pota has been nominated by the Zonta Club of Hilo to complete on the Zonta District 9 level, against other nominees from Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah.
Karr, a student at the UHH School of Pharmacy, received the club’s inaugural Math & Science Scholarship. She is a member of the National Community Pharmacist’s Association Student Chapter and volunteers at health fairs and in groups on campus dedicated to improving the health of the Hilo community. Karr’s passion involves reaching out to people living with HIV/AIDS.
Applicants write a personal statement that reflects on the needs of a scholarship, academic interest, vocational plans, extracurricular activities and interest. The Zonta Club of Hilo provides three annual scholarships, nursing, math/science and the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business.
Applications for the 2013 Zonta Club of Hilo Nursing, Math/Science, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business and the Young Women in Public Affairs Award will be available from the Zonta Club of Hilo this month. Applications can be downloaded from the Zonta Club of Hilo website at www.zontahilo.org. The deadline for all of the scholarships is March 1.
Zontians participate in a variety of projects including support of robotic programs in our schools, Hope Services, Inc., Weinberg Friends program and advocates on issues affecting women. The club is one of 1,200 clubs, with 31,000 members worldwide.
