13 motorists arrested for drunken driving
During the week of July 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 5; South Hilo, South Kohala and Puna, 2 each; Ka‘u and North Hilo, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 659 DUI arrests compared to 742 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.2 percent.
There have been 728 major accidents so far this year compared to 793 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 19 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 18 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.6 percent.
To date, four of the fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; one to alcohol; and two, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
