During the week of Feb. 11-17, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunken driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 8; South Hilo, 7; and Puna, 5.
So far this year, there have been 147 DUI arrests compared to 183 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.7 percent.
There have been 159 major accidents so far this year compared to 197 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been eight official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to two during the same period last year, an increase of 400 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
