25 arrested for drunken driving


During the week of Sept. 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, 7; Kona, 6; South Hilo, 5; South Kohala, 4; Hamakua, 2; and Ka‘u, 1.

So far this year, there have been 879 DUI arrests compared to 966 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent.

There have been 934 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,016 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 27 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.2 percent. To date, 10 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; one to alcohol; and four, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
