Autopsy: Colorado man drowned

Preliminary results of an autopsy performed Tuesday indicate that a 37-year-old visitor from Colorado died of accidental drowning.

At 3:38 p.m. Saturday, Puna police and fire rescuers responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at Orr’s Beach in the Waa Waa area of Puna. Friends of the victim told them that the man had been jumping off cliffs into the water when he became caught in the current and pulled under.

Fire personnel retrieved him from the water and took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m.

Police are withholding the victim’s name pending positive identification and notification of his family.
