Fisherman dies after fall into ocean
The Hawaii County Fire Department found the body of a 31-year-old man Wednesday on the shoreline near Hawaiian Paradise Park.
Chuck D. Lyon of HPP had fallen in the water near Ala Heiau Road Tuesday evening while fishing and hit his head. He was reported to be floating face down in the water.
Search and rescue operations were initially hampered by strong swells, winds and poor visibility.
The Fire Department found Chuck Lyon’s body Wednesday morning being pushed up by the large surf onto the rocky shoreline.
Vanee Lyon, his niece, said Chuck Lyon was fishing with his brother, Tommy Lyon, when he fell in the water.
The two fished regularly in the area.
Vanee Lyon said Tommy Lyon jumped in the water to rescue his brother but the current and surf were too strong.
“He told him, ‘I won’t let you go,’” she said.
“I guess the strength of the ocean was too strong. He couldn’t hold onto him.”
Chuck Lyon had moved to Hawaii from St. Louis in August, his niece said.
