Police have charged a former Hilo man in connection with a robbery and have taken his girlfriend into custody, as well.
On Oct. 5, a 68-year-old Hilo man reported to police that on May 25 at about 1 a.m., as he was driving a couple to a Hilo location, he was assaulted by both the man and the woman and his wallet was stolen. Police Lt. Greg Esteban said the victim knew his alleged attackers. The man sustained a serious head injury and was taken to Oahu for treatment. He reported the incident to police upon his return to the Big Island.
On Thursday, after conferring with the prosecutor’s office, police detectives charged 26-year-old Timothy “Timmy” Russ Southern Jr., of no permanent address, with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $85,000. He made his initial court appearance Friday afternoon.
Police also arrested Southern’s girlfriend, 26-year-old Chasity-Ann Kay Aiu-Horie of Hilo on Sunday. She was being held on Monday in the Hilo police cellblock while detectives investigated on suspicion of similar charges, Esteban said.
