Man dies in South Kona crash

A Ka‘u man died Wednesday morning in a one-vehicle crash in South Kona. He was identified as 38-year-old Marcus Aickin of Ocean View.

Police say Aickin was driving a 2008 Ford dually pickup truck north on Highway 11 shortly before 8:46 a.m. when it ran off the right side of the road 0.2 miles south of the 97-mile marker and struck a tree.

According to a written Fire Department statement, the truck went down a 10-foot embankment and Aickin was dead at the scene, wearing his seat belt.

An autopsy is scheduled for today. Because police believe the crash may have been caused by a medical condition, Aicken’s death has not yet been added to the island’s official traffic fatality count, pending the autopsy results.
