A 37-year-old man drowned Saturday at Orr’s Beach in Waawaa, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
Rescue workers were alerted at 3:37 p.m. Saturday, with the first unit arriving at 3:56 p.m. The first responders reported seeing no sign of the victim upon arrival, but friends of the victim were on the shoreline.
“They stated that victim went in ocean and soon got in trouble,” a report reads. “Friends attempted rescue, but victim went under.”
Rescue divers found the man’s body under water about 10 yards from the shore. He was transported via helicopter to Hilo Medical Center.
No further information was available Sunday.
