Designs by Hilo’s own Sig Zane will feature prominently on aircraft used by the new interisland service Ohana by Hawaiian.
The 48-seat ATR42 twin-turboprops will “incorporate traditional kapa fabric print elements that represent three symbols of our brand values, rooted in Hawaiian culture,” according to a release on Hawaiian’s website.
Those three Hawaiian symbols include the piko, or umbilical, that also serves as the name of a star used in navigation; the manu, or bird, which is also a name for the prow of a canoe; and kalo, which was a staple source of sustenance for the Hawaiian people.
The new airline will be operated by contractor Empire Airlines and serve Molokai and Lanai.
