Police arrest 17 for drunken driving
During the week of Jan. 21-27, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 6; Kona, 5; Puna, 4; North Hilo and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 85 DUI arrests compared to 91 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.
There have been 82 major accidents so far this year compared to 99 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities compared to zero at this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
