During the week of Jan. 14-20, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunken driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, 10; South Kohala, 2; and Hamakua, 1.
So far this year, there have been 68 DUI arrests compared to 67 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.5 percent.
There have been 63 major accidents so far this year compared to 76 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities compared to zero at this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
