Preliminary delayed for escapee

A preliminary hearing has been delayed for a Hilo man accused of a brazen daytime escape from Hawaii Community Correctional Center in December, and his alleged accomplice from Kona has waived his right to preliminary hearing.

On Monday, Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas scheduled a status conference for for 35-year-old Jarvis Naoki Higa for Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., while 31-year-old Ryan Jeffries-Hamar, who elected to forego the prelim, was ordered to appear before Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara on Feb. 21 at 8:30 a.m. for arraignment and plea.

The pair allegedly attacked an unarmed 63-year-old adult corrections officer, stole the jail law librarian’s car and escaped from the Hilo facility on Dec. 5, setting off a massive manhunt.

Higa was arrested Dec. 7 in Ocean View, while Jeffries-Hamar was recaptured Dec. 13 in Hawaiian Beaches.

Both face numerous felony charges and are being held without bail in Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu.
