Preliminary hearing delayed for Higa
A preliminary hearing for one of two men who allegedly attacked a guard, stole a car and escaped from Hawaii Community Correctional Center a week ago has been postponed to allow the defense time to receive documents and prepare its case.
Hilo District Judge David Kuwahara on Tuesday rescheduled the preliminary hearing for 35-year-old Jarvis Naoki Higa for Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
Higa was arrested Friday night in Ocean View. The other inmate, 31-year-old Ryan Jeffries-Hamar, was still at large as of press time Tuesday evening.
Higa has been transferred to Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu, state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said Tuesday. Schwartz said the move had nothing to do with potential retribution against Higa by guards at the Hilo jail.
“We just wanted to put him somewhere he’s going to stay,” Schwartz said.
